Frequently Asked Questions
1) What happens at a Body Love session?
Each session has a different group of people, and therefore each session is different. However, to give you some idea of the flow of a session, we begin by getting to know each other, sharing community agreements and best practices for the space, as well as some ‘warm up’ exercises before we embark on the Body Love experience.
You will then ready yourself on the specially prepared surface on the ground. As warm oil is poured over the body, you will be guided through an exploration of yourself and others around you.
We encourage using mostly body language and non-verbal cues. The space is safely and responsibly held throughout the session by the facilitators within boundaries discussed at the outset.
2) Do people have sex at Body Love?
No. Body Love is explicitly a non-penetration, non-ejaculation space. These boundaries are strictly held during our sessions.
3) Do I have to be naked?
Our sessions are clothing optional. We invite participants, following our introduction, to undress to whatever level they feel comfortable with – bearing in mind that whatever you choose to leave on will inevitably be covered in oil. There will be nudity in the room and it's important that you feel at ease with it.
4) What happens if sexual energy arises?
The space-time where sensual energy flows into and becomes sexual energy is not always clear and different for everyone involved.
Because of the touch based nature of the experience it is very sensual and can be highly arousing. We welcome your arousal in any shape or form it might take (erections included). If you notice your arousal is getting the better of you and the urge to involve others in it is too strong please slide to the side of the space, to relax, and regroup yourself before reconnecting to others. Penetration of any kind is not permitted and absolutely no fluid exchange. Facilitators will be holding the space to ensure agreements and guidelines are being followed.
5) What if someone does not follow the agreements and guidelines?
There is a ZERO tolerance for non conformity to agreements and guidelines. In the rare case that infractions occur, it will result in immediate removal of the person from the container and appropriate actions being taken.
6) Are there any physical limitations that would prevent me from participating?
The space is not wheelchair accessible, and there are stairs to get to the studio. This event is done on the ground. The ability to get down and up off the ground is ideal. If your ability to do so is limited, we can offer some assistance.
7) Will I be touched by other people / Can I touch other people?
All interactions at Body Love are completely optional!
You are not expected to touch anyone, and you do not have to be touched by anyone. Within the space you are able to experience Body Love on your own, or interact with those comfortable with touching and/or being touched. We invite you to explore both dynamics during your experience.
We view Body Love as a unique skin-contact experience. We invite you to be open to both touching as well as being touched. We particularly invite you to explore touch using parts of the body we do not usually touch with – our stomachs, our noses, our feet, our shoulders, our heads, our buttocks, our eyelashes, and so on.
8) If at any point I feel physically and/or emotionally uncomfortable what can I do?
If for any reason you start feeling uncomfortable here are a few things you can do. We ask participants to practice a ‘Two-taps’ signal to clearly indicate that you do not wish to be touched on that area of your body. We demonstrate this to all participants during our initial conversation and ask you to respect the system during the session.
You can remove yourself from the area or people that are making you feel uncomfortable by “slipping”, crawling or rolling away.
Even if this space is mostly non-verbal, you can use your words to set/explain clear boundaries.
You can open your eyes or lift your blindfold to assess the situation.
And you can raise your hand so that one of your facilitators can quickly attend to you.
9) Who can attend?
This is an advanced practice and requires certain skills and experience in order to navigate the subtle nuances of touch, sensual and sexual energies. If you are interested in attending, there is an application to complete. This application has questions about your experience with such events. It only needs to be filled out once. Once you are approved to attend, you can register by communicating with Yvan by email or Facebook. Application form can be found here.
Body Love is open to people of all genders and sexual orientations. There is an atmosphere of respect and acceptance at all times. We like to ensure a good mix of people and personalities in the room and so do not strictly gender balance (i.e., one man to one woman) our open sessions. We invite you to move beyond personal preference and ideas of sexual attraction into a space of welcoming and appreciating everyone.
Women Only Body Love is for women, womxn and female-bodied people (trans and cis women).
10) What kind of oil do you use?
We use refined organic coconut oil, which we have found works best. It feels lovely on the skin, and we ensure that it is warmed up to feel comfortable on the skin.
11) What should I bring?
~A lot of positive energy to share around
~One or two towels you are not too precious about – they will get oily
~ Blind fold (optional) and hair band that are well secured
~Comfortable clothes that you are not too precious about, again because of the oil
12) Will the oil get in my eyes?
Depending on the session and the way you interact with yourself and others, this may occur. Coconut oil is gentle but you may experience some discomfort or blurriness in vision if oil gets in your eyes. These symptoms are temporary.
13) I have piercings / jewelry – is this okay?
For the safety of all the other people taking part in the session, we ask that you remove all sharp/pointy piercings and jewelry.
14) What if I have my period?
We advise a moon cup/tampon for the duration of the guided oil segment of the event. For hygiene purposes a sanitary towel won't be appropriate.
